30 Day Blogging Challenge: Day 12 – A Game Everyone Should Play

This would have to be a carefully selected title. If I proclaim a game as a “must play” for every gamer, I would need it to be fully accessible, yet doesn’t insult ones intelligence with odds and ends that are simplific to an extreme. I wouldn’t pick something like Wii Sports, since I will always stay on record when I say that Wii Sports is nothing but a glorified tech demo. Unfortunately I’m going to have to don my Captain Obvious guise for this selection, but really, this is as good of a universal selection as they come:

One of the closest examples to video gaming perfection, Super Mario Bros. 3 can be approached by a complete newbie to gaming, as well as a die hard veteran, and neither would feel overburdened or wanting more. The controls are nearly immaculate, the worlds were imaginative for their time (and a couple of them still are to this day), all the power ups work as intended, and the difficulty isn’t severe. It serves as a commendable introduction to the 2D platforming genre, with a special thanks to the precision of the controls offered. There’s so much to see and do, with even more hidden away for players to discover.

While just about every other Mario title released after SMB3 was met with an overwhelming success (aside from that mostly underwhelming Super Mario Sunshine) only two others in the series even came close to matching that overwhelming feeling of nirvana – Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario World 2 (which really isn’t the most accessible in the series) Super Mario Galaxy 2. In terms of a universal appeal and can easily be picked up and enjoyed by any type of gamer, Super Mario Bros. 3 still reigns as king. I’m sure a majority of gamers have already played this one to death, but if you have not for some odd reason, please do yourself a favor and give this one a shot.
