OmegaZed’s Dueling Domain – “Extreme Victory! Tech Genus Have Arrived!”

05.31.2011

This Card is God-Like

On August 30th and May 1st hobby stores everywhere take part in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Sneak Peak event unveiling the newest booster box set in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, Extreme Victory! On May 10th, the set was officially released to the masses and the dueling world is eager to see what new surprises this set has in store for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. We here at the dueling domain have been extensively utilizing the new cards in an effort to find out just how good the new set is for the format. One particular theme we have grown attached to is the Tech Genus decktype also known as the T. G.

This new expansion brings forth many new cards to the game and one of the key selling points of the set are two entirely new deck themes: Tech Genus and the Meklords. Tech Genus are said to have the most powerful Synchro monsters in the game and Meklords are reported to be the best Synchro destroyers. While it may take a few tournaments to see if their power is as promoted, one thing was for certain for me when looking at this set; Tech Genus are a sight to behold and are one of the most fun decks I have tried out in a while. I have been playtesting various different builds and changing a few cards here and there as I quest to determine if the Tech Genus can definitely hold their own not just on the casual play sense, but if they are indeed a tournament worthy deck. Before we can get into what the deck should look like, we have to first understand the Tech Genus cards and their interactions with the existing card pool. Over the next three articles we’ll look into the Tech Genus monsters, their synchros, spells and traps before revealing a full decklist for you all to try out. This is always an exciting time in Yu-Gi-Oh! as new decks are always fun to play with on any level of play.

Let’s take a look at the monsters that make up this theme.

T. G. Catapult Dragon

It Apparently Shoots Things

While this monster’s statistics are small, it’s effect is very nifty as it combo’s really nicely with other T. G. monsters that we’ll get to in just a bit. At two stars and the ability to special summon a level 3 or lower T. G. monster from your hand once per turn, the potential to synchro summon the deck’s key cards is extremely high.

T. G. Cyber Magician

Magically Delicious

Sitting at one star level and boasting no attack or defense, T. G. Cyber Magician may not seem like anything important at first glance. However that is not the case because it contains two very good effects and one of those is shared amongst the other T. G. monsters. T. G. Cyber Magician allows you to synchro summon utilizing other T. G. monsters in your hand provided those monsters in your hand are also T. G. monsters and the synchro you aim to bring out is itself a T. G. Monster. It’s other effect allows you to search for another T. G. monster and add it to your hand during the endphase when T. G. Cyber Magician is destroyed and sent to the graveyard. This search ability adds a degree of consistency to the deck and T. G. Cyber Magician isn’t alone in this ability. Three other T. G. monsters also share this ability and we’ll get to them after we discuss this next one.

T. G. Jet Falcon

One Explosive Bird

A simple effect for a simple monster. When Jet Falcon is sent to the graveyard via a Synchro Summon, you can burn your opponents lifepoints away for 500 points of damage. Easy enough and fun to try out if you want to be flashy in playing the T. G. deck.

T. G. Rush Rhino

He Looks Like a Mega Man X Villain

This is where the deck gets beefy! At 4 stars Rush Rhino may seem like your average 1600 attacker when compared to other monsters, but he comes with many added bonuses. Like T. G. Cyber Magician, when Rhino is destroyed and sent to the graveyard, you can add another T. G. monster from your deck to your hand. Not only that, but when Rhino attacks and gets to the damage step, his attack boosts up to 2000 attack points! Needless to say, three copies of this guy have made all versions of the builds I have tested and for good reason. Even if he is in your hand and you have T. G. Cyber Magician on the field, you can easily access the deck’s many 5 star synchro monsters.

T.G. Striker

This Card is God-Like

Another of the “I like to search for other guys for you to find” in the T. G. family. Not only that but if your opponent has a monster and you control none, T. G. Striker can be special summoned from your hand. As a two star tuner monster it combo’s really well with this guy:

T. G. Warwolf

AWOOOOO!!

In my opinion, the best T. G. regular monster (we’ll get to their synchros in a future article). Whenever a level 4 or lower monster is special summoned, even on your opponents side of the field, you can special summon Warwolf. Combined with T. G. Striker in this manner and you have easy access to this deck’s many level 5 Synchro monsters. And yes…he too also has the ability to search for other T. G. monsters when destroyed and sent to the graveyard. Sensing a pattern here fellow duelists?

The T. G. monsters are a very interesting theme with various special summon capabilities and a built in search engine on 4 of their monsters. Their power doesn’t just simply lie there as they also bring forth some of the best Synchro monsters to be printed in a long time. Join us in a few short days where we highlight just that and their themed spell and trap cards! Until then, keep dueling and most importantly keep having fun!
