Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Thoughts

I finally got my hands on the new version of Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. Leading up to this point there have been changes released on the SRK message board highlighting what each will look like in the new edition. The three characters I use (C.Viper, Cammy and. Hakan) all received changes that ranged from mild to extreme.

C.Viper’s changes weren’t really much to write home about. Her Ultra 2 Burning Dance just received a better hit bo,x meaning it will be easier to land the move. So basically she still is the same character that she was in all the version of Street Fighter IV. Well this means that I’ll have to do the same amount of work to make her better. This isn’t too bad and her new alternate costume is extremely sexy. I may have a thing for women in glasses. First it was Bayonetta now Viper. Who’s next? I hope it’s Gaga.

Hakan received some changes that made me considerably better. The application of fine extra virgin olive oil has been make better. He can oil up after landing his special move or continue the attack. The most important thing is that the oil now stacks. Previously every time you oiled the later oil overrode the previous. In order for Hakan to be dangerous he had to stay oiled. Now that it stacks you can have 30 seconds of glorious oiled Hakan. <3 I didn’t get a chance to check out his new normals but I will next time.

Moar oil!!!!

Did you wonder why I skipped Cammy’s changes? Well these changes are the ones that hurt me the most emotionally. For you see Cammy was not that good in the first version of Street Fighter IV. In Super she became a lot better, in fact she was one of the top 10 in the game (nestled comfortably at number 6). This was good because I spent time improving my game (even Lemon was impressed) with Cammy. I did train on Viper and Hakan but for all intensive purposes Cammy was my main. When I read the list of changes for Cammy it was met with a Weezer-esque “Say it ain’t so“. Justin got to play the new arcade edition in Japan and said ‘It’s not that bad’, Arturo (another pro SF player) pointed out with the new normals Cammy may actually be better. So what were the changes that spawned this breakdown? Well the first one was the biggest, the removed her ability to instant dive kick, the second was changes to one of her standard special moves the Spiral Arrow. The change made it so that when the move is done, it is no longer two hits at certain ranges. That means you can no longer break focus attacks with it and some distances and combos change because what was once a promised 2 hit finisher is now a one.

A shot of Cammy in happier times.

My biggest question is why the hell did Capcom feel the need to change that? The dive kicks I could understand because people were spamming them and there wasn’t much a player could do to beat them, but to change the drill? That’s like making Cammy a new character. The matches I played after the initial warm up I won my first against a Sagat and lost my second against another Sagat. I honestly had a tough time resisting the urge to dive kick in, and I don’t think I have eaten that many anti-air moves in my entire SF career than I did in those two matches. What this means for Cammy, to quote Diago Umehara “She is going to have a tough time against the rest of the cast”. I consider myself a player who doesn’t mind working for their wins. After all I played Sol Badguy in Guilty Gear after he dropped from S class all the way down to C. So maybe I will still play Cammy because I love her, but it took me quite some time to get halfway decent with her. At least Lemon is impressed with my work, but he tells me I have to work that much harder now. I don’t know what to do so I guess every tournament I play in is the Cammy Farewell tour. Once the patch comes I may have a new main character. I really wanted to put the “everything is lies” video in this post or the autotune cry but I will not be emo I will face this new game with strength and as a bancho.

On another note I got a good look at the new characters Yun and Yang. They originally made the debut in Street Fighter 3, Yun made it to Capcom Vs SNK2 and Yang, well he has not appeared in too many other games. From what I saw they look really strong and probably we will see a good portion of the players playing Yun. I would play Yun myself for the following reason: he is wearing a baseball cap, that baseball cap has a baby chick on it, and his dive kicks. However I don’t think I will jump on the Yun train; I want to stay loyal to the women and the uhh, man I love. Yang looks suspiciously like Trowa Barton from the Gundam Wing series. I do like his ultra moves, they look really cool but he himself looks very emo.

This is just a random observation but it seems that all the Chinese characters in this game (Yun,Yang,Chun Li and Fei Long) are really good. My picks for the top 5 in this game would be Fei Long, Yun, Dudley, Yang, Chun Li, maybe Dee Jay and Zangief (only because he has an easy time against top tier).
