Preview: Mortal Kombat (#e3)

06.17.2010

Behind closed doors inside the confides the South Hall of e3, a reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise was unveiled to the masses. Unfortunately, none of us at Chocolate Lemon had the chance to brave the constant lines in order for us to capture a glimpse of any additional footage that wasn’t playing on repeat outside the viewing area. However, with the constant looping of this video demo outside the kiosk, we were able to get a good look at what lies in wait, ready to rip our hearts out once again.

There’s not a whole lot to gather from the video, but it gives a very powerful taste of what should be coming our way. Gone are the hideously sculpted character models that the series had began to degrade towards, as the outfits and looks of each character reflects their get ups from the first three Mortal Kombat titles. The familiarity of the characters looks coincides with a re-imagining of some of the classic Mortal Kombat stages from throughout the series, including a much grittier, highly detailed rendition of the acid pool opening stage from Mortal Kombat 2. The characters and world around them are 3D modeled, however the gameplay seems to retain the 2D aspect. Think Street Fighter IV’s reinvention, and you’ll get it idea.

Outside the way Mortal Kombat looks, there’s not a whole lot more information to gather. Fatalities are supposedly going to be a lot more gruesome than previous titles, with the whole “Kreate a Fatality” fiasco from Mortal Kombat Armageddon being replaced by the traditional fatalities from every MK title before it. Hopefully we will witness a more traditional control scheme that doesn’t rely heavily on obscure and convoluted button configurations. Finally, there will be a tag team based system, similar to Tekken Tag Tournament, or the Capcom Versus series. Expect to make heads roll on the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360. Here’s a handful of screenshots from the video trailer that played outside of the video booth. If and when we gather anymore information on this reboot, we will fill you all in.

I can’t even BEGIN to explain how excited I am to see this game. I’ve been an MK faithful since my youth and bared through even the bad ones with unwavering loyalty. I thought the franchise was dead after Armageddon. They actaully even gave some of the main characters fitting endings suprisingly. But this!?!?! OMG what a breathe of fresh air and relief! I can brutalize once more & Now Cyrax and Mileena can literally fight side by side!
