Impressions ~Necromachina~

06.30.2010

Hey folks, Krismas here and I am taking a break from my retro challenge to bring to you something on the other side of the time spectrum. So rev up that DeLorean and come with me to catch a glimpse of what is to come.
Square Enix is best known for its RPG-making prowess, most notably in the form of the Final Fantasy games that damn near everybody loves so much, myself included with the exception of my undying hatred towards 12. Occasionally though, Squenix likes to tinker about on other projects unrelated to Final Fantasy. Squenix and the developers at Feelplus Inc. have a new game in the works and I must say it is looking like it’s promising to be a fun game.

Necromachina fast-forwards us to the 22nd century and things are not looking good. An evil force has caused inanimate objects to come to life and threaten the existence of the very people who created them. Chaos envelops the world and it seems like all hope is lost. That is until heroes emerge from within humanity’s survivors, a group of elite ninjas known only as Moondivers, to reclaim the planet from the grip of this evil presence.
I’ve never been a stickler for stories in my games, but I must say this one sounds…interesting to say the least. I mean it isn’t everyday that you are threatened to be killed by your brave little toaster. Even rarer is a group of ninja trained specifically to counter such a threat. It’s so far gone that I love it. I get to imagine so many scenes of senseless violence at the hands of countless action figures banding together, or perhaps a pitching machine bombarding unsuspecting people with baseballs of doom. Congrats Squenix, you’ve won me over yet again in the most unusual way. Not to mention, the character is right down my generic/clichéd alley! Color coded ninjas (so that you know exactly which one you are using) garbed in mostly black and flowy clothing complete with either billowing or spiky locks of grey or black hair. Oh yeah you can just feel the untraceable amounts of ninja awesomeness exuding from every pore of their generic badassness. I mean that with all sincerity, I love their typical outfits with a somewhat original flare to them, and I honestly do not mind the color coding. Their weapons seem to look nice but I can never get a good look at them in the screenshots or the trailer other than typical default-guy sword and Greeny Gruesome’s kickass axe. I will say that you should fully expect them to be interestingly shaped.

Since the game is still unfinished, it is hard to speculate how much you can expect to enjoy what it has to offer because you never really know for sure what is actually going to be offered. As of right now this game is looking to be a very fun game, if you ask me. The trailer shows fast-paced action as well as some platform elements to keep you on your toes. The ability to cling to ceilings and walls should make for interesting level design and even possible boss strategies. With four player co-op this can be very fun for all the right and or wrong reasons. A friendly competition to see who does the best throughout the level or competing for kills or other such competitive score tracking actions are just some possibilities. Or you could be the one jerk in the team who does more harm than good at precisely the worst times and laughs at everyone else’s frustration. The ability to jump in or leave a game at any time is a nice feature and helping a fellow ninja out nets you experience, which we don’t know yet what we’ll be able to do with. Combo moves are what I can only assume to be team attacks and they get stronger depending on how many people are playing. Different combo moves can be unlocked by finding them or fulfilling certain requirements. Quite possibly the most exciting bit of extra features is the ability to adjust the difficulty at any time. I do so love a challenge as you could have guessed by my previous posts about the trials that retro gaming put the old school gamers through. A must-have for a co-op game is online playability and Necromachina is sure to have it so you can show off your ninja skills to lesser ninja across the world.

I for one am excited for this game. Squenix doesn’t let me down very often at all and they entered a beloved genre of gaming with this one, I do so love me some side-scrolling action. Combine it with my love of shiny and sharp objects and my love of ninjas and I am so there. I feel like this game will be a very fun addition to the collection, especially if you like arcade-style multiplayer games. It will probably appeal more to casual gamers since it doesn’t have a competitive mode but the hardcore guys are gonna be missing out on this one if they let that deter them. Keep your eyes out for this one folks, ya won’t regret it. This game’s release date is still unkown but you can expect it to be available on the Xbox Live Marketplace for your downloading pleasure.
