Square Enix has claimed over and over that FFXIV would not be a replacement for FFXI. They can put their foot in their mouth. FFXI’s earliest release was in 2002, and it’s about time the game died down. With recent server merges due to low population, including my home server, we are saying goodbye to the FFXI we knew. There was a time, before FFXIV was released, I remember reading on a forum that in one of their fiscal reports, S-E had stated there was something they had planned to be a replacement for FFXI, but back then we didn’t know what it was. Let’s look at the comparisons;
Environments

Comparison to Kuftal Tunnel.

Comparison to Davoi, includes bridge in both screenshots and similar textures in the rocks.

Comparison to La Theine Plateau, again similar textures, as well as similar trees.
Emblems & City-states

The 3 city states of FFXIV. FFXI had San d’ Oria, Windurst and Bastok. The emblem of Bastok has a similar boarder as Ul’dah and they are both centered around mineral crafting. San ‘d Oria and Limsa Lominsa both have their own armies (Navy in Limsa’s case) that are referred to as “knights”, as well as similar emblems. Windurst and Gridania are both woodsy nature areas and both are home to Oracles.
You will see many similarities between the two games (races, hairstyles, mobs, bosses), and after watching many game play trailers, seeing screenshots, talking to alpha testers, it’s apparent it will be a very similar game. If you liked FFXI then you will probably like FFXIV, if you didn’t well… I wouldn’t recommend it. Personally I hope it will be different enough that it won’t be reminiscent of what I already spent 5 years playing.
The video at the top is an exerpt of one of FFXIV’s in-game cutscenes. If you want to see more videos, they are all over youtube. There is also a tester by the name of “Pooky Poo” who leaked 2 full hours of game play (it’s not super exciting), I’ll leave it up to you guys to find that if you’re interested.
