E3 day 1

06.16.2010

So the first offical day of E3 brought some surprised. Marvel Vs Capcom 3 being at E3 was one of them. The line to get on that was crazy. I’ll try to get on tomorrow and give it a go. The games that I did get to play came from the West hall mainly. Sorry about my lack of photos(you know I love the pretty pictures)the hotel wifi is like F-tier so I am happy that I can barely get through this post. Videos will have to wait until we are back in NYC and on a REAL internet connection.

The first game I got to play was the newest Lara Croft game which is going to be on PSN and Xbox Live, it’s called Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. It’s a two player top down action game with some puzzle elements.I’ve played the multiplayer and it reminded me of Smash Tv. There are some interesting features, there’s competitive aspect where you can grief your teammates by dropping bombs on them and detonating them, also there are leaps of faith where you have to trust your partner to catch you when they leap across a large chasm. There was a weapons equip screen where you could manage the gear you pick up throughout the course of a level. We got video of this so check it out

Second game I got to take a look at was Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days. Seeing as how the first K&L had it’s problems there was no other way to go but up from here. They’ve made the game seem like it’s being recorded via cell phone that’s an interesting filter I wonder what else they are going to do with it. The multiplayer sounds sweet on paper we just have to see what goes down when the real game comes out.

A game that I am going to shamelessly promote is Hard Corps Rising. Best way to describe it is that this game is the love child of Guilty Gear and Contra. The build I got to play was only six months in but the sprites looked amazing, it ran so smooth. The game features the classic one hit and you’re dead mode and then there’s a new rising mode which lets you take about four hits or so before you die.

The other two Konami games I had some time on today are DDR that featured the Wiimote in addition to the pad which was mildly amusing it reminded me of Para Para. The other Konami game I got to try was Dance Masters. This game blew my mind.It was a dance sim that you got into literally because you were in the game due to the Kinect(hmm I’m considering buying one honestly). The music consisted of traditional J-pop and Eurobeat(and quite possibly one of the greatest Eurobeat songs ever).

You would think think at a big show like E3 I’d get to spend all my time playing. Wrong, I spent it listening and looking at demos. I got to look at some products like the Chicken Stick from Bad Chicken which I kind of liked. Sure make your jokes now,I’ll wait. The Chicken Stick is an attachment for the Wii mote that simulates a golf club. It sounds hokey but when you demo it you are challeneged. I’ve never golfed before but I found myself annoyed at the fact my swing sucked. It wasn’t Charles Barkley bad but sucky none the less. The Chicken Stick works great with the EA golf game but not so well with others. I got to take a look at the You Rock guitar. I don’t play guitar so Chris C got to try it out to see if it’s the real guitar simulator. It works with Guitar Hero which is pretty interesting. We’ll see how they do. There seems to be a market for more realistic instruments now-a-days.

I spent a bit of time with the guys at Paradox(PC) and all I can say is that they know their water textures. Seriously the three games they showed me Ship Simulator:Extremes, Lionheart:Kings’ Crusade and Commander: Conquest of Americas all had the best water textures I have ever seen. It made me thirsty just looking at ‘em. The were all sim games one was the realistic ship simulator where you navigate a ship(Ship Simulator:Extremes, if you coudn’t guess it). It’s like a flight sim but for boats. There’s a market for it and apparently the Navy trains on this. So these guys know what they’re doing. The next game had you fighting the Crusades as King Richard or Saladin(Lionheart:Kings’ Crusade). That one was a straight up RTS (the bane of my exsitence) so you know what you’re getting yourself into. The last is your civilization building game (Commander: Conquest of America). It focuses mainly on Naval battles so there’s plenty of watersports (ok that was terrible but I’m tired so they all can’t be golden.)

I did get to play Alex Valle in Super Street fighter IV. Yeah he owned me but it was a learning experience. I ran Cammy, my execution wasn’t too bad but not great either.

Winding down I ended up getting my photo taken with some Playboy bunnies. Nice right?

I’m seriously dead tired I think it must be the jet lag also. I tried typing this during the game and it didn’t go so well the Lakers won and I had some good pizza but I gotta gear up tomorrow is going to be an extremely long day.

We’ll have more from the floor check our Twitter feed and Facebook.
