365//365: Day 119 – Super Punch-Out!! (SNES) [PP]

04.29.2010

Super Punch Out!! is one of those sequels that manages to hold a high class of entertainment, all the while being inferior to its predecessor in many ways. The roster, which features characters from the arcade versions of Punch Out!! as well as a few created just for this title, doesn’t seem as memorable as the previous games rogue gallery. The repetitive, yet fitting soundtrack has been replaced by some generic tunes with no rhyme or reason to anything that goes on. With the timer based off a full three minute round, as opposed to the sped up three minute clock in the first title, rounds feel longer than they should, with most matches never needing more than one round to win or lose your match. Fighters like Dragon Chan are more annoying to fight, rather than a unique experience. Yet regardless of the the shortcomings, Super Punch Out!! still delivers some spot on controls and a worthwhile play-through of each circuit. The crowd and cast of characters look amazing — easily one of the best looking 16 bit titles out there. While there’s a lot of differences between the first title and its sequel (a few being quite disappointing) Super Punch Out!! still manages to have enough charm and retain enough of that classic feel to make the game worth playing and worth owning.

While the graphics are extremely impressive, it doesn't mask the annoyance and lack of connection you'll have to some of these lame boxers.

Rating: 8.1
