365//365: Day 117 – Burning Rangers (SAT) [PP]

04.27.2010

Burning Rangers was released about the time where no one was supporting the Sega Saturn anymore. It’s a shame too, since the game its self, while a bit rough in some areas, is definitely worth playing. You battle flames, rescue people trapped behind them and take on odd bosses in this futuristic take of firefighting and alien killing. For a 3D Sega Saturn title, Burning Rangers looked pretty good, however there’s a ton of pixelation abound. Audio wise, its got a great opening intro song, with some mixed bag vocals and sound effects. The audio cues that alerted you of an incoming fiery blast are quite helpful and does add to the gameplay. The fire effects were decent enough, which was important for a title such as this. Controlling your ranger proves problematic at times, as the camera has some issues. Running around, putting out fires while saving those trapped behind them had its high points, however the camera would prove to be the one foe that will leave you scorched. While a unique and somewhat enjoyable title, Burning Rangers has some mechanical issues that will no doubt dose the fire within you. It’s worth hunting down, so long as you don’t let it burn a hole in your pocket, price wise.

Impressive fire effects can't help combat the problematic camera work.

Saturn had such great gems, nothing amazing but good stuff regardless.

The Japanese were lucky Saturn owners, having so many different Capcom fighters to choose from, including some that never actually made it off the Japanese Saturn (Final Fight fighting game, though I hear that’s quite a stinker). I’m just glad that the good games were legitimately good, and worth the price of admission, flawed or not (Burning Rangers, Clockwork Knight). A shame the stinkers are REALLY stank (Virtual Hydlide, Sonic R, Bug!).
