VR Troopers – the poor mans Power Rangers, yet its not. Another Saban kids show involving actors playing teenagers when they are clearly pushing thirty, with two different Japanese show stock footage to make up the fighting scenes. It had a catchy opening theme, but the series as a whole was about as engaging as watching a snail race a rock. Somehow, the series lasted over 100 episodes, a feat absolutely no one remembers, nor cares about. Furthermore, a game was released on the Sega Genesis, based on this rather bland series. Wouldn’t you know it, the game is as forgettable as the series!
There’s really not much to say about the VR Troopers game. It’s supposed to be a fighting game, but the actual fighting part of the game is about as deep as a sheet of toilet paper. Your special moves are mapped onto their own buttons. There’s absolutely no strategy involved. You can pick Ryan (the leader) and mash a special attack button repeatedly, and almost never have to worry about anything else. During the fights between bosses, you can jump straight up repeatedly and kick the enemies into each other. It’s a shame too, since graphically, the character models look presentable, and some backgrounds do look well detailed. Everything else though, from the streamlined controls, generic music, throw away story, laughable combat system and fun factor, are all a joke.
Not only was the VR Troopers series a complete and utter throw-away IP from Saban Entertainment, but the video game tie in was too. It’s boring, lacks any skill whatsoever to play, and pretty much should never have been created. Originally, the score was much lower than listed, but there’s one very special reason why I decided to boost the score up some –
