OPEN DISCUSSION: Is Sex in video games going too far?

01.07.2010

Hey guys! Megumiaraki here and as of today I am starting an open discussion project on Clgamer. I will still be writing reviews sparingly but I would like to do something that would allow more feedback from our readers. If you have topics you would like to submit to open discussion, please send them to my email joy_goten@yahoo.com.  List your name, and the topic you want and I will make sure it gets posted if its appropriate.

Now on to this weeks topic: Is Sex in video games going too far? It seems like everyone is trying to see how far they can push it. Who can make the biggest prehaps prettiest breasts or who can make the most epic implied sex scene. How much nudity can be exposed, or the coolest upskirt. But do gamers really want or need this? When is it going to be enough?

Couldn’t Bayonetta still be a cool game without exposing skin? Do lead female characters really need to show skin to be cool?, Does anyone really care?, Wouldn’t it be more important that she is pretty rather then showing skin?, or what about the upcoming Dante’s Inferno where  in the first 2 seconds of the game breasts are exposed?  What about Saboteur’s redlight district?, or still to be released Heavy Rain’s strip tease?

Why is all of this necessary? Gamers will buy games regardless so now its just becoming too gimmicky in my opinion. If its a good game we can do without the nudity, especially if the character is interesting and the gameplay is amazing. Too much of this stuff is being used as a ploy to get more sales and its getting disgusting not only to me but to other gamers male and female.

I will still buy Bayonetta, and Dante’s Inferno because I like the gameplay not the boobs or slight nudity. What do you guys think? I have heard a lot of complaining about it recently so I am interested to hear more differing opinions. Looking forward to your feedback.

Shock Value. That’s what I think when I see most nude scenes or anything pushing the limits of nudity and sex in a video game. While it’s a tougher sell in terms of units sold (thanks to the M rating), the word of mouth over exposed breasts, rear ends and so on, will help garner more interest. Is it necessary? If it has reason, sure, why not? Has it been used in ways that benefit the story? Not that I’ve seen. Dante’s Inferno didn’t seem to need that early nude scene. I’d rather see these things used in a way that compliments whatever is going on in the game, at that time.

Nudity in video games and anything related to it is something that won’t go away. We can only hope its used in a more tasteful, and appropriate way. Not only that, we can only hope senators and congressmen don’t all waggle their fingers at these things. If a movie can have nudity and sex, why can’t a game (so long as it has rhyme and reason)? But that’s another matter!

As far as Bayonetta goes, yeah, she had clothes made of her own hair and every time she uses her moves it’s kind of revealing. I think that adds to her character’s personality though. She’s not shameless, but let me put it this way, a friend of mine was taking a shower in her dorm and a guy broke in just as she was getting out. She chased him down the street with a butcher knife completely naked.

That being said, personally I’ll take a great costume design over partial nudity any day. I think for many people sex still sells though. Back when I played FFXI I use to ask guys why they played girl characters they replied, “If I’m going to be playing a game for 8hrs a day or more, I at least want a nice butt to look at while I do it” and that wasn’t even the first time I heard that reply, it was actually common. I think we can still assume people want nudity because when you look at any game that can be texture modded, there is usually someone who comes up with a nude patch. For modders it’s a base to make new outfit models with, but for everyone else they are looking for the nudity.
