Open Discussion: IPAD OR I RATHER NOT?

Are you interested in getting the latest Apple creation, the Ipad? Its name seems to be subject of many feminine hygiene jokes.  One example would be : “Yes, the IPad is small, lightweight and slim. But can you swim with it?”

I haven’t read much about it because I am generally uninterested and refuse to spend 500 of my hard earned dollars on something I doubt I really need or want.

What what about you guys? Do you want an Ipad, or would you rather not bother? Clgamer is interested to hear why you would or would not purchase it. Looking forward to your feedback.

    I could care less about these reinventions of certain everyday peripherals. I’m not really high up on Apple either. I never got an iPod, since I’ve heard tons of stories about 2″ falls breaking them. My sister had one, it had a short fall and it broke. I have a first generation Zune. Still going, though the battery life is faltering. I’ve dropped it from 2′ to about 8′ high, and it still works fine.

    Not to mention Apple is as bad as Nintendo – releasing “revisions” soon after they released the core item. We’ll see an iPad Generation 2 within 4 months or less, which will be smaller, and have better battery life, right as all these people spent a lot on the initial release.

    Honestly, I rather carry around dedicated items that focus on what they’re supposed to – a PHONE (not a lame Sidekick or a phone that has 32gb for music and video), an mp3 player (my Zune) and my laptop (for whatever else. I really don’t care for an “all-in-one” product. If I need to get in contact with someone, a phone call or a simple text would suffice. I don’t need to have AIM access. But that’s just me, and that’s just a bit off topic.

    I’m interested, but not at that price. Essentially, I’d like to be able to kick back on the couch and read through some blogs and such in Google Reader without a bulky keyboard on my lap or the heat of a laptop roasting my junk. Even without the heat or the bulk, I have a small dog who loves to curl up on my lap. She actually gets upset when I pull out the laptop. The iPad seems to be a perfect solution, but it’s like people woke up Wednesday morning and forgot that tablet PCs already exist.

    If anything, I’d find a nice, second hand tablet PC on eBay and use that for about $200. It seems it would be just as good — albeit at a larger form factor; hotter, heavier, and without the sleek integration of all those apps or the multitouch interface. Would that be worth the extra money?

    It seems you’ll have to compromise no matter which way you go. More features, more weight and lower price versus less features, higher price and more convenience. Bottom line, some company in China will be developing a knock-off that’ll do everything you want for next to nothing in about 3 months — if they haven’t done so already.

    Apple has a way of making people want new tech, which, as a side benefit, forces other companies to compete. The result is a number of new products across the market.

    One of the biggest flaws with the iPad is that it is a closed system. It lacks the versatility of a proper personal computer. It lacks the access to hardware that most other devices possess. For example: a dead battery is irreplacable by the end-user, and I expect Apple’s repair prices to be fairly high.

    Stylus support would be a plus, as would a proper USB slot.

    That said, the ability to run all existing iPhone apps is certainly a good move, and the potential for digital board games is the thing that really intrigues me.

    If it was cheaper I’d get one asap but as it is it’s too expensive for me to justify as yet another toy for using around the house. My main interest in it wasn’t to use it as a tablet pc per se since I really don’t do all that much on my laptop or netbook as it is, but simply using it as an extension/bigger version of my ipod touch. So reading ebooks, games, music and videos. Seems like something I could have fun with, just not as an early adopter.

    @ Noz.. Yea I can see it as something interesting for playing touch games. Definitely not for 500 dollars like you say xD.

    It looks somewhat interesting to me but… at the price point it’s not practical for me. I don’t have a burning need for what it’s purported to do. On top of which, you know Apple’s modus operandi. In three months the iPad 2.0 will be announced and all the early adopters will scream about paying the cost of R&D for what eventually becomes the standard. ;)
