Fairy Tale Fights: The Final Cut Review

Its been a long time, a really long time, since I sat down to play a solid platform game on a newgen system.  Not just any kind of platform game but a game with no real, deep plot, no super-complicated mechanics.  Basically a game that I can sit down on a good Saturday and just play for the heck of it.  Fairy Tale Fights is a game like that, a nice good platform hack and slash game that I will admit…even brought out the inner sociopath buried deep inside of me.   You know, that sociopath that had urges to bathe in the blood of my enemies in order to absorb their strength.  However, not all games are perfect and as a reviewer I must report both the good with he bad.  So join me if you will, take my blood-stained hand as I guide you through the world that is Fairy Tale Fights.

Such a beautiful scene, though it needs a nice coat of red.

Such a beautiful scene, though it needs a nice coat of red.

The basic plot of this game is that fairy tale characters are getting their fame and glory robbed from them and are pushed out of the lime light, all the while chaos is being caused.  So to get back the fame they lost, the fairy tale characters venture out to restore order to their magical land.  There are four playable characters to choose from; Snow White, The Naked Emperor, Red Riding Hood, and Beanstalk Jack.  The characters themselves have no real difference in how they play, they are basically just avatar skins.  The levels of the game are broken up into chapters, and in each chapter you face wave after wave of enemies that you maim and destroy, leaving large pools of blood in your wake…your clothes drenched in your enemies life juices’…when they see you THEY KNOW YOU ARE DEATH INCARNATE.  Ah…sorry…I got carried away.  Where was I?  Oh right, it’s the usual platform game formula.  You go through each level beating up enemies until you reach a boss or a check point where your points are tallied up and such.  Of course…what would any platform game be without pitfalls and spike traps?  Well this game is full of them…and they are truly relentless and unforgivable.  I had many Mega Man and Mario Brothers flashbacks while I was playing this game, I died…and fell…A LOT.  Luckily I think the developers anticipated this so in this game there is no set number of lives.  The only thing that happens when you do die is that the amount of money and points you collect reduces greatly for each time you die.  As I said before…you will die a lot during this game, either by the many pitfalls or the difficult boss battles.  All in all, I will say this about this game; all together a very decent pick up and go platform game that is inspires nostalgia in the form of pure, old school, game play.  I recommend it for those who just want a simple game to play while they wait for that next big game to drop.

Pros:  Great and simple control scheme, and very basic game play allows you to pick the game up and just start playing.  There is also a great pick up and go co-op system.  Anyone can jump in on the action at anytime during game play.  Beautiful scenery and graphics, very cartoonish art style sticks to the whole wacky chaotic setting of the game.

Cons:  Extremely difficult at some points in regards to platform jumps and boss battles.  The music is very drab and bland and unfitting for some of the stages.  The concept of fairy tale village being the main menu is pretty annoying, it is frustrating to navigate through various options.
