Fairytale Fights

10.01.2009

At this year’s Anime Fest, Playlogic  unveiled a playable demo for the game Fairytale Fights.  Playlogic also put out Obscure: The Aftermath, which is probably the best B-movie game you’ve never played.  Wally and your friendly neighborhood Phire went to go check it out hands-on.  Initially I wasn’t sure what to expect, with a name like Fairytale fights and the description from the email which read:

Harvest your enemies with a sickle, dismember villains with chainsaws, melt faces with rainbow guns – what? You heard what I said – it’s time to learn to fight fair the fairytale way!

You’re invited to get hands on with Fairytale Fights before its release next month at New York Anime Festival where you’ll see a whole new build of the game featuring new fantasy levels, gruesome killing abilities, brutal weapons and more.

It could have gone a few ways.  It could have been another fighting game along the lines of the car wreck that was Blood and Iron or maybe something like Super Smash Brothers Brawl.  When we arrived at the booth I was surprised to see that it was a beat-em up with platforming elements.  Interesting.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD 2The premise of the game, as it was explained to us, is simple; some of the more famous characters in Fairytale lore have lost their notoriety.  Rather than deal with obscurity these characters are going to take to the streets and get their fame back.  I ad-libbed that so what!?  This premise sets the stage for what could easily be one of the bloodiest easy-to-confuse-for-a-children’s-game games that I’ve seen in a while.  The playable characters were Little Red Riding Hood (since Wally and I love our redheads!) and the Naked Emperor (and I apparently love uhhh  naked men…. err now that I think about this, it was kinda unfair I had to use the naked emperor!).

The first level took us through a lumberjack town (how manly) so there were tons of axe-related kills to be had with tons of ground saws and dropping axes to avoid. The controls are extremely simple, the right stick is used for attacks while the left stick is for movement.  The shoulder buttons control your weapons, inventory and blocking.  The fact that you can pick up this game and jump right in speaks to the ease of the controls.  Wally and I were able to combo and just plain old rush stuff down within a few minutes of play.  There is inertia present in the game so there has been a few snafus platform jumping and trap avoidance due to the little extra movement forward.  The game does provide you with infinite continues.

The game looks fairly good, considering it was an incomplete demo the models weren’t completely finished.  The actual artwork style and presentation for the game reminds me of something you’d see on Adult Swim or Comedy Central.  There is a lot of blood, I mean seriously enough of it you can surf  in.  I’m fairly certain that there will be a blood surfing achievement at some point.

This game will be on both PS3 and Xbox360.
