Eureka Seven: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers.

The new Eureka Seven movie was released here for one night last week, and I had the chance to go see it.  Since it is releasing here in America it was dubbed, but not too badly.  A few of the voices are a little…off, but the main ones are pretty good.  Hardcore fans of the series or the manga will be disappointed if they are looking for something that follows the source materials.  This is a re-imagining of the Eureka Seven story.  It takes place in the past, in what you might call a parallel dimension.  Eureka and Renton have already met as children and Dominic is their caretaker. When they part ways with Dominic they make a promise to him.  Soon after that, Eureka is taken away by the government and Renton ends up with Gekko State.  Both of them face difficult times ahead, and it will test their bonds and their love. Uniting and fighting for their future may be the only way they can save themselves, and everyone else.

So basically, you have all of the same cast, some of them have different personalities. All of them are in different situations and their relationships with each other are different. That means how they react to things changes. It’s an interesting concept. The director stated that it’s not often you get to make a movie, he wanted to do something special, something that would appeal to both the E7 fans, and people who know nothing about the series or manga. We’ve got the same themes, such as the aliens, the mechs, the army, and so on. Nirivash and The End are now portrayed as cute little creatures that remind me a little of a Pokemon character, but they can still be Mech form. Dominic and Anemone are supporting Renton and Eureka from the background. Renton and the crew of Gekko State do not like each other very much, and are almost rivals. You see some of this in the series, but there is always a subtle feeling of affection toward each other that is not present in the movie, and it’s for a reason. They kept it interesting with a lot of plot twists, and I think if they wanted to spin it like they were the past versions of the current characters, I think they could have done it easily and sent the message that “History repeats itself.” Either way, if you watch it with an open mind I think you can find this movie very enjoyable. I myself think it would have been more interesting if the movie had been the series and the series being the re-imagination, plus it probably wouldn’t have been so confusing.
