The Past, Present and Future of the Versus Series!

Everyone knows I love fighting games but I think there is a strong love in all fighting game fans of the Versus Series. In the past we have had classics like Marvel vs Capcom. When I was a kid, I used to go to the arcade/mini amusement park they had near Burger King in the King Plaza area to play this game. My favorite character was MEGAMAN!!!!!!

I loved his special…… Then there was many other great past titles like X-Men vs Streetfighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs StreetFighter, Capcom vs Snk, Capcom vs Snk 2, SNK vs Capcom:Chaos (my favorite game) and Marvel vs Capcom 2. I have played a little of each of these games, it’s exciting to play the versus series because you get to see many of your favorite characters all together, going head to head.

As time went by and fighting games gained less popularity main stream you didn’t see much from the Versus Series. In the present the Versus Series that has a monopoly on the market is Marvel vs Capcom 2. Some of the best players in the world still play that game at Chinatown Fair and pull some of the most ridiculous combos I have ever seen in a game. After 9 years that game still has a horde of fans, enough to be getting revamped a bit and re-release for the Xbox and PS3 July 29.

There are still fans of Capcom  vs Snk 2 but far and few. There are also a few that still play SNK vs Capcom because of complaints that the game is broken( ALL LIES I SAY), to me it feels better to play than its successor. One new versus games we have had hit the scene was Mortal Kombat vs DC which had a interesting concept but did not gain a large following, we can only assume that it sucked.

So what do we want or what are we expecting for the future. I really wish there was more exploration in the Versus Series. Like Tatsunoko vs Capcom which looks hella sweet although I wish it was coming out for the PS3 or Xbox 360 and not just the Wii. Why don’t we go more over the top. What about something ridiculous like Smash Brothers vs Final Fantasy. With the release of Dissidia I am sure it could happen the layout for the fighting portion of Dissida is very similar to Smash.

Also how about a remake of some Killer Instinct characters in Killer Instinct vs Mortal Kombat. I am personally not a Mortal Kombat fan anymore but Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat also had a similar pacing or style of battle and a combination of both seems doable.  Of course everyone is waiting for another remake of Marvel vs Capcom, Marvel vs Capcom 3. What about you? What are you waiting for? We at CL Gamer would love to know? Leave us a comment or 2.

-Special thanks to my best bud Mike for helping me come up with this article topic he is anxiously awaiting the re-release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 on PS3. So as in his words  “He can Rape all Day!”

They actually announced a PS3 date?

  2. Megumiaraki says:

Hmmmm, I did some research and I guess not. 360 July 29. Sorry Mikey, hopefully it will be a same day release :( .

    Thanks Noz.

August is too far away…I needs my Disidia…

  4. Nozdeuce says:

Lame, hopefully I have my 360 back by then.

Well, for me personally, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is pretty much one of the best in the Versus series….I despise when people say how it is broken (Play X-men vs. Street fighter and see if you still feel the same about mvc2….). People out there…. This is one of the few games that has a big lifespan…. This game is up there with Street fighter 2…. Also it’s one of the few games that people find a different way of kicking your ass in a way to kill your confidence….. But for the new comers playing mvc2, this game is like a warped game of chess… Knowing how to use the assist is key and don’t get caught up with the fancy stuff…. Infinites means nothing so don’t get turn off by seeing a combo video… Most of those combos don’t get used in actual gameplay (Unless you’re like me and play in CF for exercise) But the versus series I think is a section in the gaming industry that seems to be pushed under the rug… However, for all the wii fans, your versus game seems promising (Tatsunoko vs Capcom). Right now, I waiting patiently for MvC2 to be re-released…. But just to let everyone know….. Marvel comics still might be interested in partnering with capcom (After EA bascially sucked at making games for Marvel). So if you want a possible Marvel vs. Capcom 3, let marvel know how you feel and try to convince them in re-issuing their license to Capcom.

MvsC will always be in my opinion the hands down staple of the vs series. It was the first fighting game I played that got me into the fighting genre seriously.

  7. Megumiaraki says:

    Wow.. nice Wally.

Thanks Shadows you never fail to show your undying love for MVC2 :P ! lol

and Poor Noz ;_; I will shed tears for your sour predicament xD!

  8. Jason V. says:

PS3 version is supposed to be coming out two weeks after the 360 version comes out. Ouch. Dunno why things are not simultaneous.

  9. Megumiaraki says:

WHAAAA….!D: 2 WEEKS -_____- that is so lame… it should come out simultaneously……… *glares at capcom* :| lol

  10. Nozdeuce says:

Saw the announcement yesterday. So much for all of Sony’s bluster with the exclusive demo and all that.

  11. Megumiaraki says:

;_; Sony why you gotta fail me like this *my soul is sooo cracking*
