FFXIV: E3 Premier Trailer (A Sequel to FFXI?)

Sony and Square-Enix just announced that FF14 will be for the PS3 only. It will also be online. Currently we do not have much news on it other than this never before seen game trailer.

Could this be a sequel to FFXI, aka Project Rapture?

I joined FFXI back in 2005 and have been playing to present day. For quite a few years now, S-E has been keeping an MMO project under wraps code named “Rapture”. It was rumored that it would be revealed a this year’s E3, and this might just be it. A sneak peek was released quite some time ago with the FFXI expansion Treasures of Aht Urgan, however those screenshots are now too old to be even considered decent graphics. If you look closely in the trailer, you’ll notice that the 3 races shown are blatantly Elvaan, Galka, and Hume. All races from FFXI. The ship they are fighting on are very similar to the on the mmo. Even the style of the Chocobo is very FF11.

How could an MMO do well on the PS3 only?

Well, most all Final Fantasy games have started on the Playstation and then were ported to other platforms. What we can expect (and im guessing here) is that it will be ported to PC, and then 360. FFXI’s player base is largely based on the PC, PS2, and 360 with their largest player base using PC. Therefore it will be only logical for them to port it. However with PS3′s expensive price tag, you can bet they will keep the title exclusive for a while. Fangirls and Fanboys beware, your wallet may take a dent if you can’t hold out, not that I’d blame you if you couldn’t!

Update: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com official site launched. Lists PC as a platform. First 5 jobs announced on June 6th.

I live out in Seattle, Washington and work in the gaming industry. Gaming and I have a casual relationship right now, as I was big on MMOs for many years. I won't hesitate to get competitive though! I'm also a fan of anime and most things nerdy. I'd rather watch the History and Discovery channel more than anything else when I'm in front of the TV! Back in the day I jumped from Super Nintendo, to Dreamcast, to the original XBOX. By most gamer's standards I was deprived. High school was the first time I really got serious about games when a friend of mine got me in to Ragnarok Online. From there I jumped to L2 and FFXI. Now I play many genres and styles of games, and am nerdier than ever!

    I love how they said exclusive to PS3. I’ve heard that two notable times before….MGS and FFXIII. It will be on 360 and PC as well, though may not be soon enough. Hopefully, like FFXI, it will be all cross platform. If it’s not announced as multiplatform within 6 months of release, I’ll have to cry and blow $300-400 on a PS3 just for that.

    Between FFXIV Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic, the nerd inside me is screaming the primal cry of the supergeek. Hopefully both games won’t make it seem like every other MMO I’ve played, where after a while, it seems like it was all a huge waste of time.

    I’m sorry, but if this game is as boring as XI, I’m just gonna sleep in and pretty much accomplish the same amount. I’m going to believe that’s why they showed no game play, because they realized that sitting, running, and waiting to swing a great axe does not make for gripping game footage.
    Oh, wait, you can go fishing. I forgot. No Japanese game is complete without fishing.

    <.< YAY for this game I am sooooo happy! I have been playing FFXI since 2006. I can’t wait to play FFXIV! I heart you square enix LOL! I nearly jumped out my sit at work when I saw this LMAO! And its exclusive LOL! what more could I ask for O_O definitively a new reason to play my ps3 like a crazy person….XD

    @YuPing hopefully they do make a lot of improvements, from the recent battle systems we’ve seen coming out of newer ff games I think we can except a lot of changes, at least I’m hoping for that. Also I’m inclined to think that the boat scene could be game play because if you watch the HQ trailer on their site you can see there is clipping with the Mithra’s arm. (Oh square… when will you learn not to do that.)

    @Megumi I’m so excited as well! I was playing FFXI when I saw the announcement and was so distracted I accidentally let a bunch of people die >_>; When they announced the trailer for FF14 right after talking about FF13, the crowd’s “Buh-” was just classic.
