Oboro Muramasa: A reason to love your Wii

05.23.2009

Admittedly, the wii has not turned out many games that are graphically stunning. After picking up Oboro Muramasa my opinion of the console has gained a level up. It’s a 2D side scrolling action game set in the Genrouku Era, Japan. There are 2 playable characters; Momohime a young princess of Narukami Han, and Kisuke, a ninja with amnesia. Momohime starts in Kyo and makes her way to Edo while Kisuke goes the reverse. There are over 30 stages available and each one is quite beautiful. Between boss battles, ambush battles, and story mode, you’ll be running through the levels collecting items and such, but what’s different is you can move upwards and jump from branches of trees and other terrain.

The game’s combat is focused around 2 different types of swords; the Tachi and Odachi. You can change swords at any time during battle, and may perform a bonus attack when doing so. If you overuse one sword then your soul gauge will deplete and the sword will break, however it will repair if you store it for a short time.

Features:

  • 2D Side scrolling
  • 2 Characters
  • Nice Soundtrack
  • Support for Wiimote, Nunchuck, Classic Controller, Gamecube Controller
  • 16:9 Widescreen Support
  • Optional Challenges and Minigames
  • Cutscenes and Story
  • Beautiful Animation
  • Nice Variety of Attacks
  • 108 Collectable Weapons
  • 3 Different Levels of Difficulty
  • Short Load Times

During it’s first week in Japan, it topped the game sales charts at #2 and sold 29,000 copies. It’s set to release for NA September 2009, and EU Spring 2010.

I live out in Seattle, Washington and work in the gaming industry. Gaming and I have a casual relationship right now, as I was big on MMOs for many years. I won't hesitate to get competitive though! I'm also a fan of anime and most things nerdy. I'd rather watch the History and Discovery channel more than anything else when I'm in front of the TV! Back in the day I jumped from Super Nintendo, to Dreamcast, to the original XBOX. By most gamer's standards I was deprived. High school was the first time I really got serious about games when a friend of mine got me in to Ragnarok Online. From there I jumped to L2 and FFXI. Now I play many genres and styles of games, and am nerdier than ever!

As beautiful as it is, this doesn’t look like the deepest game. Not that that has ever stopped me from getting a stunning looking game before. Or just any game that was fun, for that matter. I still own Dynasty Warriors 3…

Oh well, something to look forward to come fall.
