Ultraklystron: Music for Otaku

04.23.2009

If you’ve never heard of nerd rap, welcome to the other end of the spectrum. These days main stream rap seems to only be about a few things: girls, gangs, drinks, self propaganda. Usually taking place in a club, a car, or a crib. Now don’t rip me apart already, I do enjoy a few of the songs out there. Kanye still has original lyrics, and I wont diss on a good beat.

However, for the geekier side of myself… I turn to nerd rap. Which brings me to Ultraklystron and his newest CD; the fourth estate.

What does it sound like? well, it sounds like the old school rap. Then mix that in with experimental sounds, triphop, drum and bass, even more sounds. What does that get you? A good beat. If you weren’t listening to the lyrics you wouldn’t even know it was geeky.

Tracks:

01. Death won’t stop this

02. Greatest

03. Gothic Lolitas

04. Absolution

05. Dissonance

06. Outlines

07. Not a criminal

08. Dumb crush

09. Red Shift

10. Carcinogenic

11. Webcam Girls

12. He’s an OG

13. Nerd playa advisory

14. Animate

15. D.Y.K.M.K

16. Acta attack

17. Surprise surprise

18. Unfamiliar ceiling

19. Game over

What I thought of it: I was actually surprised, I didn’t expect to hear what I did. It doesn’t sound like any corners are cut, and the lyrics are good. Which is impressive for something that is self-produced.

In my opinion…

  • Best overall song: Not a criminal
  • Best Beat: Carcinogenic
  • Funniest Lyrics: Webcam Girls

So if you like rap, or if you’ve ever walked the geeky side of life, check this CD out. There are also a few full version songs on his myspace if you’re curious!

I live out in Seattle, Washington and work in the gaming industry. Gaming and I have a casual relationship right now, as I was big on MMOs for many years. I won't hesitate to get competitive though! I'm also a fan of anime and most things nerdy. I'd rather watch the History and Discovery channel more than anything else when I'm in front of the TV! Back in the day I jumped from Super Nintendo, to Dreamcast, to the original XBOX. By most gamer's standards I was deprived. High school was the first time I really got serious about games when a friend of mine got me in to Ragnarok Online. From there I jumped to L2 and FFXI. Now I play many genres and styles of games, and am nerdier than ever!
