GREAT 16th BIT GAMES THAT SHOULD BE REMADE!

04.01.2009

The 16 bit era according to Wikipedia began on October 30, 1987. It was the era where I can remember having some of the most memorable experiences playing the latest games. A good friend of mine suggested that I write about some 16 bit games I would like remade. I thought that was an awesome topic and chose 5 that fit the bill.

#5 X-MEN MUTANT APOCALYPSE

This is when X-Men games were good and not crappy games based off the destroyed storylines from the movies. This is a classic beat-um-up game that kept me playing for hours.

Awesome level design and boss fights made it very addictive. I would like to see it remade in 3rd person view with coop functions and sticking to the awesome story.

#4 STREETS OF RAGE

Streets of Rage was one of my favorite games to play in the arcade. The most memorable aspect about the beat-em-up was you could play with 2 players. Rampaging from level to level with your buddy kicking some baddy butt felt superb.

For a long time I was irritated with the game industry because it seemed like everyone forgot about the magic of coop experiences. Luckily things are starting to change especially with games like Resident Evil 5.

Streets of Rage could either be remade with a Smash Brothers type view or 3rd person view and an increased coop of up to 4.

#3 KILLER INSTINCT

The game I used to go the bowling alley with my father and spend all the food money he gave me to play. This is still one of my favorite fighting games to date because of the sweet looking combos and beautiful mash up of sound/rhythm that they produced.

I don’t have any idea on how it could be remade but I would love to see people play it with the same addiction they had back then. ULTRA ULTRA ULTRA COMBOOOOOOOO!

#2 SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2

When I played Sonic The Hedgehog I thought it was a great game but if you picked up Sonic The HedgeHog 2 played it and then tried to play Sonic The Hedgehog again you would realize the drastic improvements this game had over its predecessor.

Most noticeably in the controls which basically is what made this game so great. As well as its awesome sound track, bosses and level design. For that reason I find it very hard to play Sonic The Hedgehog. I loved it dearly when it first launched but it feels so incomplete in comparison.

Sonic The HedgeHog 2 was the true genius of this game series. There hasn’t been a Sonic game sense possibly other than Sonic and Knuckles that has came close to replicating the experience.

I truly think there is a way this game can be remade in a 3D world it could be truly amazing and beautiful but it has to be done right. So far there are a few Sonic games that have attempted this but have fallen short.

I believe the original idea has become too complicated. The series needs to return to the simplicity it once had and it will find its beauty again.

#1 DONKEY KONG COUNTRY

And the # 1 Game is DONKEY KONG COUNTY. I remember playing Donkey Kong on the Commodore 64. Could you have ever imagined that a game like that would evolve into something like Donkey Kong Country.?

To this day this is one of my favorite of favorite games. Such simple controls and epic level design makes for great fun and unforgettable game play. Also I could never forget its rock solid soundtrack.

This game if remade would have to be done with careful consideration it would be sorely disturbing if somehow this genius was destroyed. I wonder if it could survive a 3D translation which would allow coop tag in and out play. I think it could be seriously sweet.

There are so many other great 16 bit games but I can’t list them all perhaps there are some that you have played and want to be remade. Feel free to leave me a comment and tell me what you think of my choices or list your own. Your feedback is as usual needed and much appreciated.

I see a serious lack of Gunstar Heroes

  • ForteWally

So far the only 16bit game that I always wanted to be remade has been remade and thats Kirby Super Star, which was recently put on the DS.

  • ExpertPenguin

DKC was remade…it was called Donkey Kong 64.

…and I’m one of the 7 people in the world who loved it.

  • http://clgamer.com phire

I disagree with number 5. X-men 2:clone wars was epic. You should try it out with me >;D

  • Megumiaraki

    LOL @ Expert Penguin… opps xD I thought it was but wasn’t sure. But…. did it have coop play o_O hmmm then I am gonna take a leap and say it should be remade AGAIN xD! LOL too bad only 7 people in the world liked it though fail >.<;;;;;

BOOO @ phire lmao gotta check that out xD

  • Megumiaraki

Wait I played Clone Wars XD! Looks like I need to check it out again O_O. I still think I preferred X-MEN MUTANT APOCALYPSE xD

  • dcomo

KI actually wasn’t a 16-bit game. (That was just a port to the SNES from the arcade, however I do agree that we need some new KI love!)

    Here’s my top 5:

    1. ActRaiser (Come ‘on ENIX!)
    2. Illusion of Gaia
    3. Joe & Mac
    4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (Killer in 3D!)
    5. U.N. Squadron

  • Megumiaraki

Thanks Dcomo for the info : ) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time is an awesome pick

  • ForteWally

We need to have a clgamer netplay night with zsnes

  • Dave K.

I’m with you on DK Country.

I would add PilotWings and Starfox. I know there were later versions of each, but neither as good at the 16 bit version. The Gamecube version of Starfox was really awful.

Two more in that same category to round it out:

A decent version of Marble Madness (there’s never been one as good as the original) and a version of California Games that doesn’t suck. Last good one I was was on Lynx, so how ’bout one for the PSP?!)

Last of all, a Madden ’95 remake? Oh, wait, never mind.

  • pirho

    you took me back
it would be cool to have them remade

  • Cokelogic

    > We need to have a clgamer netplay night with zsnes

    Funny you say that Wally…..

I can tell you now that it’s in the works. Keep watching the site for an upcoming post about it.

I completely agree with your pics dude…100% definetly that. But I honestly believe there are more then just those games. My top 5 would definetly be

5.Double dragons (snes beat em up)
    4.Final fight
    3.THe Ninja warriors
    2.Combatribles
1.Hokuto no ken (the sega genesis version)

Thats right i said it…I love beat em ups…they are my crack to life

  • Megumiaraki

Beast1×5 I never said these were the only ones thats why I asked for everyones picks as well. : ) Also, I am not a dude…I am a dudette : P

Thank you everyone for your feed back, looking forward to more. : D

  • Valeraxiel

Haha, didn’t think anyone knew about Joe and Mack.

  • http://www.myspace.com/galarian Jason V.

16 bit era was way too awesome. Hard to narrow anything down but I’ll try –

    5. Super Mario RPG
    4. Earthworm Jim (lord not a 3D one)
    3. Secret of Mana
    2. Aladdin (GEN) (cell shaded 2D, made to look even more like the film, same exact gameplay)
    1. Final Fantasy VI (DS remake will be out in 2011, watch!)

  • dcomo

Yep, I know all about Joe & Mac.

It would be great to see more original 16-bit titles on here instead of Arcade ports like Double Dragon and Final Fight.

On a side note, supposedly a company had purchased the rights to the Epyx catalog and will be re-releasing California Games, Summer Games and the others for the Nintendo DS soon!

  • Megumiaraki

@ Jason V Aladdin FOR THE WIIIIN! LOL! I so never got to finish that game…. my bro borrowed it when he went away to college and never bought it back lol… it was SOOOOOO AWESOME XD!

@ Dcomo Thats sweet maybe I can put some more use to my ds xD lol

@Dave K I don’t like sports games but I used to play with my bros when I was younger…SOOOO much better football games back then LOL …..Simple but not too simple or overly complicated and super fun : ) Hilarious your comment… a version of California Games that doesn’t suck…. xD!!!!

I gotta see if I can get my bros to comment on their top 5 games too :3

  • http://www.linkentertainmentonline.com T Woods

I think Streets of rage was a good pick. It’s a shame they haven’t remade it yet.

    Great article!

  • http://streetwars.net Mike from episode one

1- Zillion. Way overlooked side scroller for the SMS. Get the Sega Fusion emulator and play it NOW.

2-Any beat em up, but preferably the Streets of Rage series. Then maybe I can forgive the shoddy localization of #3.

3-One of SNK’s 8-way shooters. Victory Road was my favorite. I would pay 1000 MS points for it right now if it were available, and its soundtrack was awesome.

  • Megumiaraki

    @ T woods thank you bro :3

  • Megumiaraki

To address some more feedback I was getting on facebook about Sonic being Better than Donkey Kong I will say this….

Its my own personal opinion everyone is entitled to theirs but sonic to me is not better than donkey kong

Sonic was really good but not better than Donkey Kong xD
Donkey Kong tag in and out system is already better than sonic
TAILS USELESS in Sonic 2 LOL

Level Design is more interesting.. Come on the MINE CARTS O_O…..
Don’t get me wrong Sonic had awesome levels too but Donkey Kong was more intriguing to me. I can go back and replay that entire game and still be just as interested and intrigued as I was back then.

Sonic not so much its just fun to rampage/speed through everything.

Bosses are more unique not Dr. Robotnik every 5 secs.

Donkey Kong is not about Just bouncing on heads to get through the level…throughout the entire level design there are ways to push the player to think and solve issues.

This is also to an extent in Sonic but in my opinion not so much. Perhaps I didn’t explore enough but once again it is my opinion that Donkey Kong out shines Sonic.

There is no poll I took or anything that is why I asked for feedback… Give me your top 5 picks I have no problem with that I don’t expect everyone’s views to coincide with my own : )

  • dcomo

Mike- You hit it dead on! Zillion DOES need to be remade!

  • Kenien

    YOOOOOOOOOO THIS LIST IS POPPINNNNNN

  • http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v521/YuPing/ YuPing

Do not, and I repeat, do NOT remake these games.

    Port them? Sure.

XBox arcade or Wii download? Fine.

Remake? With today’s trend of putting in bs achievements, ridiculously stupid stories, inane voice acting, realistic graphics for the sake or realism and total lack of simple artistic vision, and gimped gimmicky gameplay mechanics? That means all these beloved games would be turned to utter trash.

Anyway, Gunstar Heroes had a bunch of new versions. Didn’t a DS version come out last year or something?

Also, I disagree. Tails isn’t useless in Sonic 2. Tails is GOD in Sonic 2. He can’t die! Just have Sonic whimper and cower in some safe corner while Tails kills the boss. AGAIN.

  • http://republicofgeek.com bryan

YuPing makes a great argument, and I’m with him/her.

Another point to make is that these games are also great because they are part of our childhoods. I don’t like ruining my childhood with remakes. The memory is there, leave it alone, let me make new ones.

  • http://www.simra.co.uk Kristopher Charves

What a great point you make. Yes, some people just don’t need to comment to feel they have participated to the fullest. That’s not their style.

  • http://www.spokane-roofing-contractor.com Spokane Roofing Contractor

Great post. I really learned a lot from reading it and a couple others on your blog.
