Spring 2009 Anime
Hello everyone! I’m Allowei and I’ll be bringing you all the new reviews on the best anime I can find. I’ve been an anime lover since I was young. Every morning before school there I was, 5am without fail watching Sailor Moon. Did I know it was anime? Naw, but all I knew is that it was the best show ever. Good thing animation has improved so much since then.
So what’s coming up for the Spring season? There’s a lot to cover unlike the un-impressive winter line up. To view everything click the picture below. Here are my top interests:
Shangri-la:This story takes place in the middle of the 21st century when global warming has turned Tokyo into a tropical city. In order to prevent further damage, they aim to make the city into the world’s largest forest city. The overcrowding of refugees makes it nearly impossible to live there now, and anti-government guerrillas are attempting to stop the forestation.
I haven’t actually been able to find a lot of information on this series. Character designs are done by Renji Murata, works include Robot and the designs for Last Exile. Which leads me to believe it will look like an improved style of Last Exile, but I havn’t found screen caps yet. Either way, the plot seems very workable. Hopefully it will live up to all of the hype.
Eden of East:The series is set in 2010. An uninhabited area of Japan has just been hit by a missile, which claims no lives. The apparent terrorist attack is disregarded by most people and labeled “Careless Monday”. Three months later, Saki Morimi is on a trip in Washington D.C. when she gets in trouble in front of the White House. A mysterious, naked man named Akira Takizawa with no memory appears to help her, all he has is a gun and a cell phone with 8.2 billion yen in digital money.
Okay, yes, for sure I will be following this one, and no it’s not because there is a naked man that looks like Morita from Honey and Clover in it. For good reason though, the character designs are done by Chika Umino who designed the H&C characters. Not only that but the soundtrack will feature Kenji Kawai who’s works appear in Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, and both seasons of Higurashi. So I am already expecting great things. Kenji Kamiyama will be directing and his works include… well mostly everything GitS. Check out the trailer if you’re interested, the animation is quite pretty.

K-On!:4 high school girls who are trying to save the light music club. Adapted from the 4-koma (4 panel style) manga.
Okay… that’s not much of a plot… at all. Here’s where its redeeming quality comes in. It’s being animated by Kyoto Animation. Their works include AIR, Kanon, Clannad, Lucky Star, Haruhi Suzumiya. I can’t imagine them botching up an anime, even if it does have a simple story line. I think it will probably be more of a fun anime. If anything it’ll probably have good music.

Other things that may or may not be worth mentioning:
Chi’s Sweet Home: New Home – How did that manage a 2nd season? I think I got through 20, 10min episodes of the 1st season before I couldn’t take it anymore. Sure it’s cute, but how much minimal dialog can one take?
Marie & Gali – Figures the Gothic Lolita anime is animated so simply, I’ll probably watch an ep or two out of pure curiosity and love of Lolitas.
Dragonball: Kai – A remastered version of the original run. So you can watch Dragonball squeezed into 20 some episodes. What would Dragonball be without 7 straight episodes of Goku powering up though?
Pandora Hearts: I like the whole Alice in Wonderland style, but it seems like it could be so-so by the trailer, I’ll check out the first few eps anyway.
Sengoku BASARA/Devil Kings – Adaptation from the PS2 game. Can’t say if it’ll be good or not, the animation should be decent at the least. I might check it out.
Senjyou no Valkryia/Valkryia Chronicles – Adaptation from the PS3 game. Not to be confused with Valkryie Chronicles. No idea how good it’ll be.
That about wraps it up. Expect to see reviews on a lot of these animes in the next few weeks. Most of the line up starts around the first week in April. Now I have a bowl of ice cream that requires assaulting.
Woo, new MAzigner series!

Have everyone seen how often Japanese males are getting married to Game characters? Out of major curiosity; does anyone apart from me picture that as weird? I mean sure, everyone should be entitled to their own likes/dislikes and be allowed to marry who they want, but do any of you think they should be only allowed to marrying and/or dating real life people? I just think it’s a bit strange. I’ve never even thought of getting with a Anime character before. I don’t think I’d ever like a 2 dimensional character.
@Tear
There are some things to take into consideration with that. Generally, the people who would do this, are very hardcore about their anime. They are the European football fans of anime to put it in perspective. The games they tend to marry girls from are dating sims, which tend to focus on winning over the girl of your choice. NEETs and Hikikomori (No current employment, education, or training, and the 2nd is a phenomenon where an individual will not leave their house upwards of 6 months.) are even more susceptible to this because their lines of reality become blurred if they are spending too much time in the virtual world. They estimate that hikikomori make up 1% of Japan’s population, and 20% of all adolescent Japanese men. When you think of it that way it’s not so surprising that something like that could happen. I do find it kind of weird, but I’ve seen much weirder things.
