Sniper Scope

02.16.2009

There’s nothing more satisfying than a well placed head shot. Nothing. Take it from a seasoned horror movie watching, medical text book reading, corpse-perusing, gore fanatic. I, unfortunately, haven’t played that many games who honor the glory of sniping. I’ve witnessed Killzone, barely played Call of Duty, snoozed through Ghost Recon, and bored myself out of Halo. None other has done it as much justice as Gears of War. Playing through the first installment, it had not yet been 5 minutes into the Kryll Nightmare before I picked up the long gun lying near the dark. I examined it, wondering if it was worth exchanging for my Lancer (never!) or my beloved shotgun, clean head blower-offer per active reload. I take it along, giving the latter gun a longing second glance as I went on my way. Then a Drone came out of the dark. I draw the long gun. I am instantly amazed at the range of the scope. I center aim at the head. I shoot. Bang! Giblets of brain and skull everywhere. I was amazed; my mouth curled in a sickly smile.

“Would you look at that.. No precision lost to unnecessary firepower; smooth elegant design, AND it’s good for bashing goddamned Wretches upside the head, one of the downsides of wielding the Lancer 24/7. No more getting bitch slapped while switching guns, babey!!”

Personalizing weapons is probably a strange concept, but it’s exactly what happens here. In my cyber-soldier duties, I have to admit I’m the Baird type. Tactics and brains above all else. In my noob days, I’m sure there were a good number of instances in which I jumped into the preponderance of whizzing bullets, but now, it’s something of rarity. Sniping only accommodates this tendency. After all, it’s the only COG weapon besides the mortar, and the torque bow that allows you to sit in a corner, follow some moron on the field and then blow them asunder, Hammer of Dawn notwithstanding.

In honor of snipe lovin’, I actually hope to get my hands on a PS3, for after seeing Killzone 2, it’s too tempting to resist, even if I couldn’t entirely discern if the sniping is as pleasant as Gears had rendered it in this game. In fact, I was just browsing around a minute ago, and some 60GB brand spankin’ new platform will cost me somewhere around the neighborhood of 1K through some independent vendor. I should be thanking Sony for that BS, but I think it’s only pathetic for me, because I’m seriously thinking about ponying up the dough. Seems like a lot considering that the only thing I want is Killzone 2, but hell…

Maybe I’ll stumble upon some sweet sweet guns. And maybe I’ll get to snipe some fools; watch some head giblets fly up, etcetera.. The cash seems absolutely worth it.

I live out in Seattle, Washington and work in the gaming industry. Gaming and I have a casual relationship right now, as I was big on MMOs for many years. I won't hesitate to get competitive though! I'm also a fan of anime and most things nerdy. I'd rather watch the History and Discovery channel more than anything else when I'm in front of the TV! Back in the day I jumped from Super Nintendo, to Dreamcast, to the original XBOX. By most gamer's standards I was deprived. High school was the first time I really got serious about games when a friend of mine got me in to Ragnarok Online. From there I jumped to L2 and FFXI. Now I play many genres and styles of games, and am nerdier than ever!

You know, I have to agree. As a matter a fact just recently, I pulled off three head shots in a row, one after another. And I tell you what…I think it moved. So praise be to the head shot and to those who prefer to find that nice spot with that pulse rifle or sniper rifle. And yes…even those who like to go for the gusto with the rocket launcher from long distance. Some people may call you a camper…me…I call you the unsung hero of the FPS genre. Without you, no one would really live in fear during an online match. Oh sure, a blast from upclose is something to worry about. However…what really sends fear down someones spine is the death from nowhere. The invisible killer! I know…I may have some nay sayers after reading this. I may have those who feel that we snipers are ‘campers’, but I say this to you: Rant all you want, I suggest ducking and moving more often.
