We’ve finally made it to the point where gaming is in the mainstream media more than ever. Gaming award shows, movie adaptations, million dollar competitions and sales high as ever. This is a beautiful thing for our community. Why is there yet still a shadow cast over us, the gamers, during these fine times?
It would seem we still can’t shake our stereotypical image of kids with no social lives & nothing better to do than rot within our imaginary Platform/RPG/Shooter/Sporting worlds. A guys club with no sense of hygiene who are usually skinny as a rail or too fat to be seen as anything other than a “frequent” customer at McDonald’s. Most people refuse to believe any gamer is capable of being good in any real life sport. I see where PART of the problem is coming from.
It’s us… Yes we, the gamers, are partially responsible for feeding this fire. Every time I see a launch event or tournament on T.V. it’s always the same story with these kids on camera. When asked “How do you feel about this game?” they are sure to reply, “It’s fun, I like it!”. Same at tournament scenes, which im heavy on all the time. “How did you prepare for this event?”, lame drag answer being, “Ummm, I played a lot cause I wanted to win”.
We see this happen all the time. Yet we lay down and let THAT represent us. We’ve got personality, so the next time your in front of a cam crack a tasteful joke or something. Lets enrich the interview with a bit more than a one liner about fun. Webmasters shouldn’t have to think twice about building forums for us because of constant flaming due to one person making a typo. And ladies, a lot of you game harder than us guys. I know your scared to really “come out” cause of our bad rep, but we gotta start this together!
