Affliction Day of reckoning review

This past saturday which passed was one of the greatest MMA events so far in 2009… THe matchups were

Fedor Emelianenko vs Andre Arlovski (wamma undisputed championship of the world match)

Josh barnett vs Gilbert Yvel

Vitor Belfort vs Matt Lindland

Renato Sobral vs thierry Sokoudjou

Pual buentello vs Kiril Sidelnikov

Dan Lauzon vs Bobby green

For the first match up which was Lauzon vs Green consisted of striking exchanges and a number of grappling mix ups.. one of the most awkward things which happened during the match was the fact that Green “accidently” hit Lauzon in the groin three times during the match… Lauzon Finally snapped out of it in the second round and finished the fight with a rear naked choke.

The Second match up Which was Buentello vs Sidelnikov ended in a split decision in favor of Buentello. Sidelnikov entered the arena as “Baby fedor” and the crowd had extremely high expectations for this fighter but with the years of experience behind Buentello he was able to leave a mouse (huge black eye) on the left eye of sidelnikov winning by a high percentage of strikes and a greater aggresive offense towards his match

The third match Sobral VS Sokoudjou I had extremely high hopes in my favorite fighter Sobral simply because he has evolved as a fighter.  There was a great amount of clinching and knee exchanging in the first round. Sobral being very aggressive in the match managing to score several takedowns in the match and outperforming sokoudjou. In round 2 sokoudjou was taken down and Sobral was able to score several points with his ground and pound tactics.  Lots of elbows and punches while sobral was in sokoudjou’s quarter guard.  The fight was reset in the middle of the ring and sobral utilized his ju-jitsu and managed to pull a 3 quarter stack (half of a sleeper hold / Darce choke) and then spun into an anaconda choke winning the match agains sokoudjou

The fourth fight was fast , quick and straight to the point. Vitor Belfort (also known as the man with the fastest hands in MMA) completely DESTROYED (and i emphasize on this) matt lindland. In the opening 36 seconds of the fight they exchanged strikes and then Belfort landed a vicious left hook which put matt lindland down on the canvas then Belfort put the exclamation mark by giving Lindland a few more punches while he was down. Lindland was knocked out indeed..but also concussed. X_x ouch!!!!

The Fifth fight was between Josh Barnett and Gilbert Yvel. Take note ladies  and gents Yvel was banned from fighting in the states due to kicking a referee in the face a while ago for a bad call.  For a returning fight he was put up against barnett. In this fight Barnett COMPLETELY dominated Yvel catching a full mount on Yvel 98% of the match and punching his way to victory until Yvel tapped out in the 3rd round.

The main event between Fedor Emelianenko and Andre Arlovski was indeed hyped and was well awaited. Fedor was defeated in a previous sambo tournament for the first time in 8 years!!! and many of his loyal fans (Me being one of them) were worried that he wasn’t gonna have any motivation to really fight. Arlovski came to american to train with Freddy Roach who has also trained Manny Pacquiao and other vicious boxers. As an MMA and fedor fan I thought Arlovski had this fight won.. I was wrong. In the opening 3 minutes of the fight Arlovski was winning the striking game with a nice 69% striking landing advantage against fedor. When arlovski threw a front kick at fedor which made Fedor bounce off the ropes Arlovski jumped for a flying knee which was IMMEDIATELY countered with a sickening overhead right which connected beautifully with Arlovski’s chin leaving him Knocked the F*** Out…Arlovski came out of his status moments later Leaving fedor the Reigning WAMMA champion.
